How to Exchange Crypto Cheaper: 6 Ways to Keep More of Every Swap
- 2 min read
The difference between the best and the worst exchanger for the same swap is often 2–5%. On a few thousand dollars that's a dinner, a flight or a month of subscriptions. Here's where the money goes and how to keep it.
Where the money goes
- Spread
- The exchanger's margin built into the rate. Varies the most between exchangers.
- Network fee
- Paid to the blockchain for the payout. Depends on the network, not the exchanger.
- Hidden extras
- Minimum fees, “service” fees, or a worse rate for small amounts.
1. Compare final payouts across exchangers
This alone saves the most. Rates are quoted differently, fees are taken at different steps — only the final amount is comparable. An aggregator requests every exchanger for your exact amount and sorts by payout.
2. Choose a cheap network
USDT on BEP20, TRC20, Solana or TON usually costs far less to move than on Ethereum (ERC20). If both your wallets support a cheaper network, use it — the coin is the same, the fee isn't.
3. Mind the amount
Fixed network fees weigh heavily on small swaps: sending $20 can cost 5–10% in fees. Bundle small exchanges into one. Very large amounts, on the other hand, can get a worse rate or extra checks — compare a few sizes.
4. Floating rate when the market is calm
A floating rate is usually more profitable because the exchanger doesn't price in the risk of a price move. Choose fixed only when you need a guaranteed payout during volatility.
5. Avoid network rush hours
Network fees spike during hype and big market moves. If you're not in a hurry, wait for a calmer hour — especially for Bitcoin and Ethereum transfers.
6. Skip extra hops
Exchanging A → USDT → B costs two spreads. An instant exchanger often swaps A → B directly at a better combined rate. Check the direct pair first.
